Star Wars fans who have been looking forward to checking out the entire saga in 4K may want to set aside some cash. As has been rumored for months, Lucasfilm is indeed releasing a massive Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga box set encompassing the entire Skywalker saga in 2020, with all of the movies coming to 4K Ultra HD. Well, all of the saga movies anyway (but more on that in a second). Not only has the box set been confirmed, but pre-orders are available now. So bust out those credit cards, fans.
Not long ago, images and details of the box set leaked online thanks to a leak from Best Buy Canada. Now, Best Buy has officially released the Star Wars Skywalker saga 4K box set for pre-order. The set consists of 27 discs and all three trilogies. The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. While specific details haven’t been revealed, it’s assumed at least a handful of those discs will contain bonus content.
As for what it’s going to cost? The set is listed for $249.99. That certainly prices out more casual fans, and hardcore fans may have some considerations to make. For one, over the decades, lovers of a galaxy far, far away have potentially purchased the original trilogy and the prequels multiple times across various releases. So shelling out big money again may seem undesirable. It’s also worth mentioning that this is strictly limited to the saga movies. The Star Wars standalones produced by Disney, Rogue One and Solo, will need to be purchased elsewhere.

Another very worthy point to make is that the set will not include (barring an unforeseen miracle) the theatrical cuts of the original Star Wars trilogy. George Lucas famously altered the movies for the 1997 special edition re-releases and that is how they’ve stayed ever since. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has indicated they have no intention of releasing the original cuts, and there are those who doubt it’s even possible to do so, since Lucas altered the original prints. Point being, for that kind of money, you’re still going to have to deal with the song at Jabba’s palace.
With the Star Wars movies set to take a break now that The Rise of Skywalker has hit theaters, Lucasfilm and Disney will need to find other ways to capitalize on the franchise until it returns to the big screen in 2022. A big, expensive box set is certainly one way to go about it. After all, it worked out pretty well for Marvel with the Infinity Saga box set. Expect the studio to make a splashy announcement about it a little closer to the home video release for The Rise of Skywalker.
